It is our honour and privilege to present to you this Report on the Legacy Conference to Raise Awareness of the Contributions of the Special Court for Sierra Leone to International Justice, Peace and Security.
The conference was organized by the Residual Special Court and its partners in Freetown, Sierra Leone, the seat of the Special Court, from 25-28 February 2024.
It was attended by over 300 participants, including heads of government and ministers, scholars, academics, judges, lawyers, human rights organizations/activists, development partners, victims, civil society organizations, women’s organizations, private sector actors and community leaders from within and out of Sierra Leone.
The Report highlights the very important participation of the parties to the establishment of the Special Court – the United Nations and the Government of Sierra Leone who were represented at the highest levels as keynote speakers, thereby signifying their respective commitments to upholding the legacy of the Court and all that it stood for.
The Report documents the activities of the conference which were held on the margins of the plenary meeting of judges of the Residual Special Court.The keynote addresses, deliberations and conclusions of all the sessions on a wide range of transitional justice and legacy-related themes, the take-aways from the pre-conference focus group meeting of victims, survivors and civil society with Residual Special Cour t judges and a cross-section of conference delegates, and the unresolved ques- tions of the end of mandate or end of life of Residual and investigative mechanisms are contained in the Report.
